AFRICAN INTERNATIONALS CLEAR PRIZE MONIES

In the male category, Habtamu Fikadu, from Ethopia coasted home to victory in the time of 42.50 minutes thereby securing the $50,000 first price money. Hot at his heel was Geofred Kusuro from Uganda who won the $20,000 second price in the time of42.02 minutes. Closely following was John Sumpol of Kenya, the third price winner of $10,000 in a time of 43.06 minutes.

In the female race, Rita Jeptoo Sitieni of Kenya (the first Kenyan winner of the race) out-raced other athletes to win the first price of $50,000 in a championship record of 51.42 minutes. The second price of $20,000 went to Ashu Kasime who breasted the tape at 52.01 minute and lastly Angela Mutuku from Kenya, a third price winner of $10,000 at a time of 53.09 minutes. It was, therefore, a clean sweep for Africa in the 2007 race, a race feat by any index.

In the history of the race, no athlete had won the event back to back. So it was that not only last year's winner Francis Kibiwott, failed to retain the crown, shockingly, he could not finish among the first 10. The same furtune befell Anna Pichrtova, the Czech female champion of 2005 event who finished sixth.
